2006 WV Summer Activities for Children with Disabilities

Adventure Pursuit: Offers summer day camps for children with disabilities. Call 304-485-0911 for more information. Camp dates set based on reservations.

Camp Choosy: Offers week-long camps at the WVU Coliseum that focus on physical activity. Camps are a part of the WVU Physical Education Department, Motor Development division. There is a registration fee of $125. For more information call 304-293-3295 ext. 5250. June 6th - August 5th

Camp Echo: Held at Cedar Lakes in Ripley. This is a five night camp for individuals 18 and older with mental and physical disabilities, with activities such as swimming, crafts and entertainment. Call 304-422-7243 for more information. June 4th - June 8th

Camp Gizmo: Held at the WV School for the Deaf and Blind in Romney for children birth to 8 who use assistive technology devices and their families. Teams help children actively participate in all activities and find out which forms of assistive technology work for the child. Call 304-558-2696 for more information. July 15th - July 19th

Camp Happy Face: The Cerebral Palsy Parents Council Summer Camp, held at the Spring Heights Education Center in Spencer. Activities include arts and crafts, swimming, treasure hunts, movies, a hay ride, etc. Participants must be accompanied by a caretaker. For more information call 304-927-5865. July 30th - August 4th

Camp WINACA (WINning Against Cancer): Held at Camp Golden Horseshoe, in Tucker County for any child 7-16 who has had cancer. Call 800-288-3618 for more information. July 31st - August 5th

Celebrate Independence: Held in Wheeling, WV for youth ages 12 to 17 years who are visually impaired. A variety of activities are planned, with a focus on life skill experiences promoting independence such as: computer lab, outdoor nature workshop, and leisure activities. Tuition fee is $25.00 per camper. Please contact Seeing Hand at 304-232-4810 Monday through Friday from 8:00-4:00 for additional information. July 23rd - July 28th

International Sports Jamboree: Held at North Bend State Park for teens between 12-20 who have mobility and/or visual disabilities and do not qualify for the Special Olympics. The event is sponsored by the Verizon West Virginia Pioneers. Call 304-623-9571 or sportjamb@aol.com. July 15th, 16th & 17th

Mountain Milestones & Teen Adventures Summer Day Camp - Stepping Stones: Held in Morgantown for ages 6-18. The camp is 6 weeks long. Activities include swimming, bowling, golfing, kayaking, outdoor recreation, and arts and crafts for children of all abilities. Call 304-983-7837. June 12th - August 4th - Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Mountaineer Spina Bifida Camp: Held at Cedar Lakes in Ripley for ages 8-18. Swimming, socialization skills, sports and all kinds of fun activities are offered to campers. Call Nancy Dunst at 304-345-8197. June 12th - June 18th

Muscular Dystrophy Association Summer Camp: Held at Cedar Lakes. Each camper will get their own counselor, who stays with them during the week and helps them during camp activities, including scavenger hunts, fishing, swimming and boating. A prom is also scheduled. Call 304-344-9807. June 18th - June 23rd

Special Olympics Summer Games: Held in Charleston. Call 304-292-2496 for more information. June 2nd - June 4th

Summer Safari: For children ages 3-7. Group activities, crafts, snacks and therapeutic games. For more information contact Therapy Services, LLC at 800-834-1137 or 304-599-9250. Held every Thursday in July from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

WV Elks Handicapped Children's Camp: For physically challenged children, 7-15 and mentally challenged ages 8-25. Applications are available from your local lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.

WV School for the Deaf Summer Enrichment Programs: The theme for this summer is "Tales from the Rivers and the Seas." For children who are deaf, blind, have auditory and/or visual impairments in grades 4-12. Call Patsy Shank at 304-822-4840. July 9th - 14th There is also an extension deaf/blind camp held July 9th - July 21st.

YMCA Youth Opportunity Camp: Available for children between 7 - 12 who meet the following requirements: those receiving TANF; those receiving SSI; those receiving Protective Services; those living in a household meeting income guidelines. Applications are limited and can be picked up at Monongalia County office of North Central West Virginia, in the magistrate court building on Spruce Street. Call 304-291-6795 for more information.
